More than 60 years of service, ServiceMaster Clean Canada has a proud history of innovation and growth achieved through a family of entrepreneurial businesses stretching from coast to coast.

ServiceMaster Clean Canada began in the 1950s with Thane MacNeill developing a unique carpet cleaning maintenance program in Toronto delivered through a network of individually owned Franchises.

Gary Franklin joined in 1967 with a vision to unite all the Canadian Franchises under a national banner to provide a leadership role within the industry and better service to customers. In 1993, ServiceMaster of Canada partnered with the owner of the ServiceMaster trademark in the US and is now a wholly owned subsidiary.

Over the years, ServiceMaster Clean Canada has continued to develop new and innovative office and commercial cleaning programs and has developed some of the biggest and best individually owned franchises in North America.

Ian England was named Vice President of ServiceMaster of Canada on January 1, 2000. Ian joined ServiceMaster in 1976 as a carpet technician in Toronto. He purchased a franchise in Downtown Toronto in 1983 and tripled its sales over the next 13 years. The business won numerous awards from ServiceMaster including twice wining the Marion E Wade Expert Award. The business was sold in 1995 to his key employees where he joined ServiceMaster of Canada as Business Leader for Commercial Services.  In 2000 he became Vice President of Operations for Canada and most recently, he assumed the role of Chief Operating Officer.

Today, ServiceMaster of Canada has 250 Franchisee businesses’ (387 licenses) delivering a variety of services to home owners, businesses and institutions under the trade styles: ServiceMaster Clean, ServiceMaster Restore, Furniture Medic, Merry Maids and Amerispec.  Under his direction the Canadian Home Office Team and the Franchise Network have produced sustainable, profitable growth by serving the varying needs of their Customers.


Ian reports directly to the Chief Operating Officer of ServiceMaster Clean in Memphis, Tennessee.

Gavin Bajin joined ServiceMaster of Canada in August 2010, taking the role of Business Leader, Commercial Services. His personal values resonated in the organizational values and he enjoyed the opportunity to apply his skills to help grow the franchise network through leadership, business influence and innovation.

After completing his Mechanical Engineering degree, Gavin worked for a hydrogen generator manufacturer where he benchmarked the company’s first repeatable assembly processes.  Gavin then continued his career in manufacturing engineering by working for Xerox where he ran 4 assembly lines and was responsible for 27 unionized employees that produced $1M worth of equipment each year. He then moved to the construction services industry in 2003 where he joined Stephenson’s Rental Services and was responsible for creating business processes and sales efforts to help streamline a business unit.  He successfully helped grow the business unit from $3M to $10M over 7 years and reduced quality control incidences by 50%.

In 2012, Gavin assumed the role of Director of Business Services as the division better aligned to serve our franchisees and customers.

Gavin reports to Ian England, Chief Operating Officer of ServiceMaster of Canada, located in Mississauga, Ontario.

Mike Coyle

Business Development Consultant, Business Services
Years of service: 12

Michael Coyle has over 30 years of janitorial operations experience and has been with ServiceMaster of Canada for 12 of those years. In his role as Business Develpment Consultant, Michael is responsible for supporting the growth of our Business Services teams across Atlantic Cananda, Saskatchewan and Eastern Ontario.

In his previous positions, he worked in Montreal and Ottawa where he honed his French language skills. 

Michael’s strong operations background, management skills and health and safety knowledge have been an invaluable resource to the organization, as well as to the franchise network.

Under Michael’s leadership we have seen significant and profitable growth in the janitorial service business.

Michael reports to Gavin Bajin, Director of Business Serivces, ServiceMaster of Canada, located in Mississauga, Ontario.

Canadian Contribution

Over the years, Canada has made several contributions to ServiceMaster Clean operations internationally. A program initially known as Spotlight was launched in 1973 and is the father of modern carpet care maintenance methods. It consisted primarily of the concept of spot cleaning, complemented by less frequent deeper cleaning procedures.

Additionally, Canada pioneered the sale of franchises by service line. This concept promoted greater expertise and knowledge in each service line.
